NFL COMBINE DAY 3 WINNERS & LOSERS: Quarterbacks, Wide Receivers & Running Backs

Saturday at the NFL combine was about the QBs the wideouts and the running backs. All three positions that give you a lot of sizzle. And with that, we bring in CBS sports football analyst and former Louisiana running back Emery, Hunt and Emery. Out of all the QBs who actually participated on the field, who was your winner? Brady Cook out of Missouri. And if you’ve been following me, Chris, for the last two seasons, I’ve been telling everybody that would listen. Brady Cook is a really good football player because
he’s a dynamic athlete. He does a great job in being a gamer and reminds me a lot of Andy Dalton when he was at TCU. He led that team to the Rose Bowl against Wisconsin. Brady Cook is the same type of guy. He went out here and ran really fast for six in the 40 yard dash, and we saw him in the drills. The passing drills show the accuracy deep down the field, showed the accuracy at the intermediate levels of the field. I thought he had the most consistent day of the quarterbacks on both sides of the groups that worked
out today out there in Indy. All right, so that’s your winner for your QB. How about at the wide receiver position? Because we had a lot of guys who were blazing on that 40 also showing their soft hands. Who was your winner for the wide receiver group? Man first of all, when did everybody start running for threes like they’re 4 or 5. Like when did that start? Evolution. Evolution man it’s crazy. So I couldn’t go with one. So I gave you two because they both have really good days. Luther Burton out of Missouri and also Jaylen
Nowell out of Iowa State I feel like no is just stacking positive performances this offseason. He had a really good all star game circuit built on that by having a very good combine workout. So the speed played fast, able to control his speed, which I think is a true attribute you need to have as a wide receiver. You don’t want to play fast all the time. Situation dictates that he does a great job with that. And Burton had to remind folks out there in the gantlet like, hey, I’ve been a big dog on the
block. I think y’all must have forgot. Shout out to Roy Jones Junior, but I like the fact that they both went out there and handled their business. Yeah, they certainly increased their draft stock with their performances on Saturday. Now to your favorite position, running back. Who stood out to you the most on the running back front man because there are a lot of good ones. Again, everybody is running super fast nowadays. I’ve clearly missed that, that genetic transformation that these guys got in my day. When
you look at Michel Tuten out of Virginia Tech, I am so glad, Chris, he got this opportunity to perform because he started his career at North Carolina, and so had he stayed at AA, I would have been talking about him as a guy to watch. Everybody would have been saying, stop bigging up these small college guys. So I’m glad he transferred to Virginia Tech. He ran the fastest for the running backs. Then he doubled down on that and jumped the highest for the backs and vertical jump at 40.5in. So when you combine that with how
explosive he is as a runner, this is a big time showing. And in my opinion, this is an example of the transfer portal going positively for a guy at a small school, took a chance on himself, went to a power four program and balled out, earned himself an invite to the combine and made the most of it. And now maybe, you know he’s going to shoot up draft boards, and perhaps a team will draft him and he lives out his dream. Now. There always are players in the combine who you weren’t really checking for them as much as
some of the other guys. So who is your surprise player from the combine on Saturday? Jonte Wester, the wide receiver out of Colorado. What makes him so special, Chris, is people want to pigeonhole him as a slot guy, but when you really study his tape and study how he moves and then you watch him work out in these drills, he is a legit route runner. He can route you up immediately and can win in all at all levels of the field. I think was underrated about his game is because he’s a shorter, a shorter, smaller guy. People
think he’s just a jitterbug, but now he can really get deep down the field. He can win off the off the line of scrimmage, and he can catch the ball with his hands consistently through traffic and also is a rack guy, so I thought he had the most impressive day. I knew about his game, but I’m glad the world got to see the in totality what La Jonte Wester is all about, right? Because it’s easy to get overshadowed by should door Sanders Travis Hunter on a Colorado team. Right. That was very exciting. But as you
pointed out, that dude can ball and he’s got a lot of talent now on the downward side. Right. Who was your loser from the combine on Saturday? And the word loser has such a negative connotation. But when you think about a guy that didn’t have the best day in terms of running, it was especially when you look at what everybody else is running and you run a 4 or 7. That was Josh Kelly of Texas Tech. And the reason why I say it’s kind of bittersweet, because the on field drills, he caught the ball rather well. He was able to
track the ball rather well. But you can’t get out of your mind the 4 or 740 yard dash. And the good part about this is the fact that he went out there and ran a 40 yard dash and ran it at the time that he ran it. So now he gets to go to his pro day and improve on that. I feel like he plays like he’s a 4 or 5 five guy, so we’ll see him probably run 4 or 5 five in Lubbock at Texas Tech’s pro day. And we’ll forget about this four seven that he ran out there in Indy. Yeah. And somebody else is hoping to forget about their
performance on the 40 is Tez Johnson from Oregon. He’s only five foot ten, 154 pounds, ran a 4.5. That’s not something you want, but maybe he changes things at his pro day. Emory hunt we always appreciate the time, man. And so here’s a look at Ryan Wilson’s mock draft top ten. He’s got cam Ward going to the Titans. Mason Graham from Michigan to Cleveland. Cheddar Sanders perhaps the future of the Giants. Will Campbell for the Patriots. We know that offensive line needs work Abdul Carter Travis Hunter the two way
star going to the Raiders. Then Kelvin Banks junior going to the bears who also need help with their offensive line. Full mock draf
