Is there anything more beautiful than mother and child? Video of a mother Clydesdale with her newborn filly in Winfield, Kansas has people so moved. The baby is so little! In fact, the filly was only three days old in the footage. Which is probably why she was glued to her mama’s side.
Mama Forest must be so proud of her baby. The filly is just precious! But because she’s so new to the world, she’s just a little bit shy. That’s okay little one!
The video, shared by Broken Spoke Clydesdales, shows the duo as they make their way outside of the stable for a little walk. Little Pearl is such a cutie! We think this must’ve been her first time leaving the enclosure. Which means she had the whole big, wide world to explore.

Thankfully, Clydesdale mom Forest was there to show her filly the ropes. Together they walked over to the pen and the young horse followed her mama’s example. She’s learning so fast! Mom even brought her little one around to meet some of the other horses on the farm. Too cute!
People in the comments section were positively enthralled with the pair. “I love how the baby stays real close to Mom,” wrote one person. “Omg. Her walking her baby to show off to the other horse. How awesome,” another commenter chimed in. “I love that all the horses are coming to check out the baby,” someone else noted. “The way she introduced the baby to the neighbor,” gushed one commenter.
Pregnancy in Horses
Aren’t these two the absolute sweetest? There’s something about a mama with her baby that really has us choked up. It does have us wondering — how long are horses pregnant anyway? It’s a good question. One that we have an answer for, for those of us as curious as we are!
In general, horses should start having their first babies at around 4 or 5 years old. Some horse trainers try to breed their horses earlier than that age, but it’s not advised. A horse’s skeleton needs to develop so that she can safely hold her pregnancy.
Once a horse reaches maturity, they can start having babies! In general, a horse’s gestation period lasts about 340 days on average — or up to 11 months. This might change depending on factors like their age or health, but in general 11 months is normal. Horses can give birth up into their 20s, although it is harder for a mare to give birth for the first time in her teens or 20s.
So there you have it! The filly might only have made it earthside days ago, but she’s been with her mama for a long time.
